You are sometime dictated by the material the wall is made of and obviously the thinkness. To the depth you can sink boxes, so be wary of this.

I realised that, but was pointing out (for the OP's benefit) that there are also modern thingies designed for the job, which aren't roundWhat i meant was Ive seen round ones like the old style but with clamps in
I have to say that I've never seen 'traditional' round JBs, but with cable clamps - who make them? Are they larger than normal, to accommodate the clamps?

I think i see them in edmunson, there about 80mm, size of the old bigger 20 amp ones, I will have closer look next time who makes them
