Are satellite dishes redundant?

I'd regard a Sat Dish as an 'Active' antenna and a terrestrial aerial (without an amplifier) as a 'Passive' antenna. With an amp. it's an active one.
Active antennas are becoming more common as using higher transmission frequencies becomes more and more necessary. Think you will find the receiving (patch) antenna in a mobile 'phone is becoming effectively an active antenna.

Um.... isn't a sat dish an antenna then?

You are right of course. A sat dish is a form of antenna. I should have said. "There is no way a UHF antenna will provide all the programmes available on Freesat."
