Heard on this forum that Artex used to contain asbestos, but didnt quite believe the posts so i thought i would ask Artex themselves. Hear is the reply i received...

'Artex Compound, manufactured between 1937 and July 31st 1984 contained approximately 3.5% Chrysotile (white asbestos). During 1976 onwards, asbestos free material was made available for those customers who wished to purchase. From August 1st 1984 all Artex products were entirely asbestos free.

Other companies manufactured similar products to Artex throughout the period in question and whilst it is on public record that they also used white asbestos, I have no information about the levels used nor when they stopped, but it may have been several years later. Although Artex was and is the brand leader, passing off and substitution is common in the trade so unless you are absolutely certain what was installed, you should suspect product up to the latter '80's may contain asbestos.'

All quite revealing, I wish they would make this public knowledge before i had scraped numerous ceilings of the b*stard stuff.

Suppose best thing to do is skim straight over it without scraping it first.

Hope this is of use!

Ps I dont work for a asbestos removal company!
