Asbestos soffits - a worried mum

One wonders quite how asbestos managed to reach quite such a pariah status. As mentioned, it is a dangerous substance in quantity and unbound, but realistically the chances of anything untoward happening (in a domestic situation) is far less than if you've ever had a drink in a smoky pub.

Thank you so much for all your help and advice, you’ve certainly helped to make things a lot clearer to a novice like me!

Separate asbestos question, whilst on a roll... hallway had artex ceiling but we had someone plaster it over. A few months back, we had a leak in the upstairs bathroom which impacted hallway ceiling. Had electrician out to change light fitting as was wet from Upstairs leak and there was dust everywhere which needed cleaning. Appreciate this was a while back, but.... Would that have been a big risk given original ceiling was artex? Thanks for the continued teaching!!!

Artex typically pre 1999 contained <4% white asbestos (the least dangerous) so, again whilst it's understandable to be conscious of it, almost certainly nothing to be overly concerned about.

Certainly, Artex did have a small asbestos content but as the ceiling was skimmed that issue has gone......it wasn’t ever there as a matter of fact so long as the Artex wasn’t sanded or scraped.
The dust left by the sparky would have been the typical dust found in the void between ceiling and floor above (all houses have it) and its nothing to worry about......its simply plaster dust and the Artex is just a thin covering on top of that.

You can clad over asbestos without disturbing it.

You may also have the Marley tiles bonded to the floor, I left ours down and just tiled/ laminated over the top of them.

If it's in good condition and undisturbed best left well alone imho.

Thanks for your help!

Here’s a random question for you, we’re thinking of having our driveway redone. Do old concrete driveways typically contain asbestos? House born in the ‘70s. Cheers

 no, now stop agonising over asbestos.

Have you considered a resin replacement coating for your drive, Benj? Expensive but looks great if applied correctly......it doesn't like mistreatment such as jacking cars up on it or whatever.
