Hi,

I'm currently building an attached garage on the land at the side of my house.
I'm currently out of ground and floor is poured with walls being started on Monday.
I'm now planning ahead and need to source a lintel for my garage door. the rear can be concrete over the door/window as it will be rendered but the front is in engineering to match the existing house brick, therefore can't use a concrete lintel.
the door is 8ft, call it 2.5m (including the frame) there will be plenty of pillar space to allow the for 150mm over hang. I'm hoping to sit the timber wall plate ontop of the lintel and fill the lintel with some brick to face it. as I am limited in height for the roof and want to keep my pitch as steep as possible. the garage is 3.4mX8m and has a pitched roof(2 faces, front and rear) with a gable to the side not adjoined. the front aspect of the garage will be done in eng brick(73mm) and inner skin in solid block. there is no cavity, this is a solid 9" wall.

What lintel do you reccommend? and is there anywhere in the Liverpool area that supplies them?

I have access to a steel fabricators through work, I was wondering if it was possible to give them the dimensions required and let them fab one up, or are there certain requirements for a lintel?

Thanks in advance I hope I've given all the info required.

Use a proprietary pressed steel 'solid wall' lintel.

You can also buy solid wall inverted 'T' shape lintels that are obscured from view on both the inner and outer leaves.

Shown here (the two central lintels).

Thanks again Noseall.

I have found this site which give the required measurements, how ever it doesnt say what thickness the steel is.

I just miss out on the 160mm high as my opening is 2440 for the garage door or roughly 2550( including the frame) therefore I would need a 2850 length lintel.
I am going to ask for a favour from my steel suppliers. Would it be a sensible assumption to think a 180mm flat bar with a 215mm flat bar strip welded (every 200mm or so) would satisfy my building inspector?

Doubt it, it's a purpose-made affair, so he'll want to see some numbers. He won't understand any of them, but he will feel safe and secure if he sees some heiroglyphs on a piece of squared paper.

Fair point. I'll price up the T shape and the box lintel tomorrow and see which is cheaper. I dont mind how the internal wall looks so the box lintel is preferable. I'll also speak to my Inspector and see if he wants any calcs. hopefully he's accept a visual. especially if its a 215mm high lintel which can span alot further than I need!
This is my first extension so I'm trying to gather as much knowledge as possible as I find it comforting to know I'm doing it correctly!

I'm hoping My wall plate for the rood trusses can sit ontop of the box section with a small amount of overhang that should mean my lintel wont require 3 courses of brick. does anyone have any pictures of how a typical garage door/lintel sits within the brickwork?
heres some pictures of whats happening. currently no walls yet..thats happening as of Monday!
