Has any one heard of a modern unvented cylinder creating a bad rotten egg smell ?
Cylinder is in a holiday home (so does not get used every day) and sometimes when hot water is drawn a foul smell like rotten eggs comes from hot water tap.

Any ideas anyone ?

Probably bacteria in the water heater.

Mains water supply? Sacrificial anode (used in enamel lined steel cylinders) ? What make?

You need to read up a little on legionella. In particular you need to ensure that, after it has been unused for a while, the water in the heater is thoroughly pasteurized by bringing it up to 60 degC for some time before anyone uses the water. Flush out the shower rose with very hot water before taking a shower.

Where does the water come from? In some Yorkshire dales water comes direct off the fell through a small plant to add chlorine. You could indeed be growing something in the cylinder, rotten eggs being the smell of hydrogen sulphide, a by-product of bacterial degeneration. Single-cell organisms love a warm wet environment.

I have had this before from a 50 lt over sink water heater, it had to be replaced to get rid of the smell, Gary
