in the process of doing nvq2 gas maintenance read conflicting information earth to neutral test 1.5 volts or 15 volts ???

the lower the better but given that there can be a lot of volt drop on the suppliers cable runs and the potential of real earth does vary 15V should not be a concern.

I think the OP has read that the PD between the two should not be more than 1.5V or should not be more than 15V, and is asking which is the right figure??

15V seems more reasonable than 1.5V to me though it could conceivablly be higher than either.

its not something that you have much control over anyway at least on TN-S and TT installations.

Yup, in theory on a TN-CS it is permissable given a 9.2v drop to see 4.6v difference between n-e at the remote end of a circuit.

and on a TN-S or TT is could be much worse than that.

consider if their transformer is at 250V but by your house its at 210V (still within spec) then you would have a 20V drop on the neutral!

thanks for getting it I followed the the other replys but went over my head a little I think the general idea if youve not got 240 there any way the readings on the live test would be proportionally differant can I ask what are we supposed to do if it is higher than 15v whats op supposed to do if he does, is there any thing he should be consentrating on at that moment saftey wise  still in the dark on that one trying to be a good guy your gran is my gran sort of thing the least thing we can do is keep the old buggers warm eh / my brains dropped a cog with age  but its finally clicking in to place to much gas gas gas got my focus diverted from the what you guys know snap crackle pop comes before bang thanks for your attention staying a live staying alive
