We have a bathroom basin which needs a new waste fitting, however I can't seem to find a bathroom waste which is suitable for the overflow on the sink.

For some reason image attachments are not working, so here's the link to the photo http://www.image-share.com/upload/3589/71.jpg

I've tried standard slotted wastes, but when I put this over the threads on the waste, there's far too much free play and the slots don't line up with this hole, making it almost impossible to get a decent leak free seal.

I don't have the original waste anymore so I have nothing to compare against. But it was one of those pop-up types that attached to a lever on the tap. It looked something like this though http://www.ebaths.co.uk/basin-pop-up-waste-and-rods-9208r-687-p.asp

Is there a pipe connected to that running from the overflow further up on the basin? What size is it? You could cut the trap nut down to allow it to pull the trap pipe up tight. Worst case is use a standard waste and the overflow pipe's fed in further down.

Yes there's a flexible pipe which connects to the overflow hole on the sink.

There isn't really much I could trim off the overflow to make it fit sadly.

You can see in this link just how much bigger the overflow is compared to the waste, and it results in the water leaking from the threads around the nut when fitted.

I think I've managed to fix it. I used a grinder to extend the height of the slots in the waste to be low enough to prevent water build up. With the help of some plumbers mate we appear to be leak free.
