Hello
I am attempting to do some plumbing, but I am not sure of a few things, I would be very grateful if someone can advise me.

Q.1. When fitting 15mm and 22mm copper tube to bath & basin taps I understand that I should use a compression fitting at this point, should the "olive" be soldered to the copper tube befor inserting tube into the tap OR be free to move on the pipe ? is it a matter of just tightening the nut to the tap thread and this will give a water tight seal ??? any advice is appreciated

Q.2. When using copper 90 degree elbow joints, do I need to use a paste on the areas of the tube/elbow joint that are to be joined to make the solder run ? is there any other preperations I need to make befor soldering.

Q.3. I am not sure of which type/name/spec of solder to ask for.

THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP & TIME.

Peter I'll try:
Q1: Do you mean the fitting onto the tap thread?.The best thing to do is solder your tap connectors onto 4" of copper pipe and fit your fibre washers in before tightening them up before you put the bath in.Then just connect with a compression isolation valve when the bath is in place. In a straight answer to your question you put the olive on the tube loose it is compressed when you tighten the fitting making a seal.

Q2: Yep you need to clean the mating areas with wire wool and then flux with a thin film.If you haven't done this before you need to practice first get some cheap 15mm straight connectors.

Q3: Normal unleaded solder.

I think you will struggle with a big project like this could I recommend that you do the job in speedfit pipe the slight extra expense will save you a leak nightmare!

as Simon mentioned, if you have never done this type of thing before try it on a scrap bit of pipe for practice.

for solder you could try

http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?id=15480&ts=13560

you should also put a small amount of ptfe tape on the tap thread

http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?id=15527&ts=13925

the flux is http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?id=16396&ts=13970

yorkshire joints are best because they already contain the solder (although you shoud still put more solder on to be sure)

yourkshire joints are at http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?ts=14195&id=76629

and the copper push fit are at http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/cat.jsp?cId=101595&ts=14172
