If I clad the bathroom walls with backing boards, presumably their lower edges don't just sit on, or slightly above, the bath? How far down the walls do the boards run? What would be used to seal any joints where the boards are butted up together? Do the (stainless) screw fixing holes in backing boards need sealant? Any brand recommendations? Are the boards all the same thickness?

Does the bath go in and then the floor is tiled up to it?

You might want to ask the mods to move this to the tiling sub-forum.

Is a tape and tanking paint for joints .
Run the boards down below bath level and tank/seal to bath edge before tiling .
Assuming you can board it square and within few mm tolerance .
Might loose a lot of bath edge fitting the boards on top plus tile .
Yes tile floor after bath is fitted allowing for bath panel when fitting bath .
