I am looking at refurbishing the main bathroom and there is a void that is wasted space where the soil stack is boxed in - most of one wall! So, I was thinking of using some of the space to add some recessed shelves within a frame - effectively a cupboard without a door.

A couple of questions

Would this be best made as a softwood frame with thin (say 9mm) moisture resistant MDF as a skin? or would it be better with 18 / 22mm?

I am not quite sure how I would make something just yet so suggestions would be great!

Just make box cupboard from MDF to fit.
Be sealed when painted back and front
