Bathroom stud wall with niche

Hi all, I'm in the process of building a stud wall that will separate a bathroom (shower wall) and a bedroom. I also plan to build in a shower niche. On the bedroom side, I was planning on fixing ply board to the stud wall so that on the bathroom side I have a solid surface to fix the tile backer to in the niche.

I was wondering what thickness ply you'd generally recommend for this? Also, can I get away with using 9.5mm plasterboard over the ply instead of 12.5mm. Space is really tight for the bathroom and bedroom so I'm trying to save space where possible.

Thanks, Woody. If I didnt add the layer of ply to the bedroom side of the wall, this would leave just the back side of the 9.5mm pb for the back of the niche and for tile backer to fix to. The length of the niche will be roughly 900mm so the 9.5mm pb would be unsupported for this length.

Personally I would not build a niche as it's just extra corners to hold water, get mouldy, it's always wet because it's a horizontal flat surface.

I'm personally not that fussed about having a niche too but unfortunately not my decision

I did one last year, normal plasterboard then tanked. Came out nicely
