Is it better to have one long piece of baton for your curtain to be attached to ? Got two smaller bits at each end. Attaching- best to drill through the baton in to masonry with masonry bit then hammer brown plug through?

Full length batten allows multiple fixings into brickwork ,so will be much stronger. And yes drill masonry ,fit plugs. Don't use masonry bit to drill wood though ,use proper drill bit for wood.

Why you say that? If you use a wood bit you still have to then change to masonry bit and push it through the hole, what's the difference?

Masonry bits don't drill too well thru wood ,but will go through. Lots of friction ,causes the drill bit to get very hot and makes the tungsten carbide tip of the masonry bit less effective. Best way is drill all your holes in the batten first with correct drill bit for wood , drill on high speed. Then use masonry bit with drill on hammer action to go thru already drilled holes in batten into masonry.
