Can anyone give me some advice on installing a bay window where there is currently a standard casement window. I can obtain the bay and its considerably cheaper if I install it. The bay will come with a plastic roof on the top. Can someone advise on what I need to install on the underside of the roof i.e on the room side at the top. I presume some form of extension is required to meet the new window. Should I insulate above this?. I'm a pretty experienced DIYer.

You will need to create a ceiling to close off the underneath of the new bay roof. Do this by attaching a wall plate of 3 X 2 to the outside wall above the window opening ensuring it will be enclosed by the new bay roof and make sure it is at the correct height for new 3 X 2 ceiling joists to run from it and sit level on the top of the new bay window (the bottom of the wall plate and the top of the window need to be level ). Fix these in place and your plasterboard ceiling fixes to these new joists.Use Drywall screws to avoid banging away at nails and shaking it all. Make sure the wall plate is fixed solidly because this will also act as a support for the window. By all means put some insulation in the bay roof space but allow ventilation via a soffit strip vent if possible to avoid condensation especially with it being a plastic roof. Hope this makes sense but if you get stuck let me know and I'll try and find a diagram for you.

thanks DAZB. I presume it is wise to fix the top of the window sections to the new joists so as to lock everyting together. I would propose to use coach bolts or similar to fix the 3x2 to the wall. It all sounds plain enough but if you do find a diagram then you can email me at [email protected]

thanks
