BCA Auctions

40mpg is very good for a vehicle like that. the 3litre turbo is a great engine. Admittedly not the same car, but I've had well over 50 out of my wife's 435d cabriolet in old lady mode.

My question was more aroun a 18 plate 100k miles x5 versus a five year old Skoda 50k machine.
It’s the principle I’m trying to understand about high mileage new versus old low mileage

I’m afraid an X5 on an 18 plate for £20000 is just a non starter unless it’s a dog or a basic petrol.
With that sort of mileage the engine has hardly been switched off and its used up a fair bit of its economical life.
Decide on the car(s) you would accept, check out what Car Guru or Motorpoint are offering and that’s what you’ll have to pay.
If you find a cheapo in the auction, believe me it’s there for a reason!

Thanks so much. If I can ask one final question that is where do people actually buy cars from.

I’m in London so car giant? Or the likes... somehow I always thought auction house with a high mileage motorway cruiser would be best. Now I’m having second thoughts

Cargiant and the others is a good enough place to start , but you’ll notice that the cash price is quite high but the PCP rate is favourable.....certainly worth doing the maths first because after a few years you’ll have paid the full price for the car but you’ll never own it
Other sites offer a delivery service for a fee as will many of the dealers using CarGuru. ( You’ll find the same vehicles in Autotrader).
You’ll get a better trade in price from a dealer than a supermarket but of course the price will be higher....
Slightly more leverage maybe.
So - decide which car you’d prefer, then comb the ads for an average price. You’ll see that one or two vehicles stand out.
Look at the small ads in your area for the independent traders. Some will be rogues but you seem to be looking for more specialised up market cars. If you find one that’s been on the forecourt for a few weeks it could be worth a visit.

I’d have a look at the big motoring world group. They are fairly close depending on which part of London. I’m not sure about how they work with Covid. But basically it’s a big car park with all the cars grouped by model. You can arrange test drives and the buying process is easy as long as you resist the up sell.

I don't think mileage is such a concern in a modern car, provided it's been correctly serviced.
We moved on our 06 Mondeo 2ltr. petrol auto just over year ago, after nine years of generally reliable motoring. Purchased at 86k & sold at 170k ... the new keeper is local & as far as I know the car is still going strong.

I’m not sure if Chloe is still tuned in to this one, but a diesel car is only suitable if long runs are envisaged.
Around the streets of London (not that I’ve ever been there) sounds a recipe for disaster if the engine can’t get nice and hot and have a regular fast run.
John :)

I have read, more than once over the years, that the fuel economy savings of a diesel are only realized if driven for at least 20k per annum.
God knows how many miles I have driven large capacity weasels in HGV & PSV vehicles, but I don't like them in a my car. Petrol straight 6 or V8 for me ;)

Im still here folks!! Thanks so much for your input - Its really helpful - Will be popping in to cargiant this weekend.

Still undecided on actual car ... I just want somthing new with toys and carplay so preferred high mileage - Hubby wants low mileage older car - You can see why we came here to get a second opinion :)

Thanks a very good point indeed thank you !! I quite like the new Volvos

s90 or x90. They look amazing.

If you can sort out a short list, check out the Honest John website - you’ll find any issues that vehicles have had during their lives, and how happy owners are.
You can also check any recalls the car has had - which may cure insomnia :p
John :)
