Hi,

I have just spent half a day scraping off about 20 years of vinyl paint and emulsion off a plasterboard, and plastered wall... as was going mouldy and staying damp / holding water...prety sure its only condensation, as it is bedroom, and we dont get much sun / heat on the wall... have gone back to the plaster and all seems to be drying out nicely... the plaster top coat needs a bit of filling but not too much...

what would be the best paint / sealant / unibond or covering to put back on the bare plaster... before i paint a colour...???

i wont be using vinyl again, as it seems to hold moisture..

Apply a mist coat to the bare plaster which is emulsion watered down between 20-30% depending on how thick it is to begin with. Or a coat of zinnser gardz.

Any source of damp will cause problems to a paint film, if its an external wall that could be a source but if it is condensation it will still be a problem. Eggshell is tougher and more resistant and easier to maintain and zinsser do a coating designed to be mould resistant but cant remember what its called. If your thinking of putting a non to low vinyl on like contract emulsion or estate emulsion it won't handle cleaning and wiping etc.

when you say mist coat...do you mean paint it on ??? just wondered what is meant by mist ? as apposed to sprayed on... i just wondering... thanks...
