the best time is autumn, as it is less likely to be walked on and will get plenty of water. you can in the spring as well, but it is a shorter period before the dry summer
I agree. Autumn is best also because weeds dont have a chance to grow so vigorously before the winter. Spring time sowing always means you get more weeds in the grass than at autumn. If you want a date I reckon 10th-15th September to be spot on times. So get out there!!!
Dont be worried if your lawn isnt lush looking by the time winter comes. Dont forget to leave it six weeks after sowing before you cut the grass, but do try and cut it once before winter sets in, as it encourages healthy new growth before the frosts! I would also dress the new lawn in mid november with some lawn feed and then leave it. By mid march - early april next year your lawn will be as lush as a racing gallop!!!
