Hi all,
I live in a terrace house and have crack in the wall between me and my neighbour at the top of the stairs on the landing. He has a version of the same crack his side, as does everyone else on the street. We've having our house decorated next year and I am wondering the best way to have it address this. ie, just fill it in, or use helibar, which an engineer once suggested. I know the crack will likely return if we fill it, though I'm equally worried using helibar might just lead to the crack appearing elsewhere (and costing a lot more). Or is that wrong?
The house is 150 years old and has shallow foundations, and as I say, everyone seems to have the same crack, it just doesn't look great.
Thanks for any thoughts, two photos attached...
Barry

Common place to crack.
Is it near the top of stairs?
Knock plaster back to brick.
Fill crack with sand and cement.
Screw metal lath with wedi washers over the crack.
Plaster over that.
Corner crack rake out and fill
