yes its ok to chisel. TBH, i dread to think who thought of using thermalite to build walls, never mind actually support buildings.

go very steady with thermalite or you will end up going through.

plastic blanking plates are unfortunately quite brittle

taking it slow on a drill press with a block of wood underneath is probablly the best way but i haven't tried it myself.

should be easy enough to drill then, brass is a pretty soft metal easiest way for a diyer would probablly be to screw the plate face down to a block of scrap wood, made dents with a puch to guide the drill and then drill it with a normal hand held drill and a HSS bit.

since the plate is metal make sure whatever sockets you buy have built in plastic peices to isolate them from the plate they are mounted on.
