Beware of cash machine.

Have to design a little umbrella, detachable cuff, for one's coat.

Deploy at the keyboard, thus disguising button pressing !!

On a serious note, there was a prog on TV, Rumanian gang, placed a 'card reader' on the door of a Bank atm lobby, alongside the real 'reader cum door lock release' ... Even the Policeman investigating did not realise that one opened the door the other was a plant !!!

My bro works in a young-offenders prison. He was talking to a Romanian chap who had been running a scam like this. The guy didn't care that he was in prison for the next few months. He had sent the money back to his family as he "earned" it. There was enough to buy an enormous house in Romania, and live quite comfortably for years.

I saw someone have the "you've dropped a fiver" routine attempted on them. This is where during the period that the machine is counting your money, someone points to a £5 note (or any note) on the ground behind you and says "excuse me, I think you dropped that". Many people are greedy enough to say "oh, yes. thanks" and pick it up. Whilst you are doing that, the money comes out of the ATM and they grab it and run. Luckily for this guy, he was either not paying attention or knew what they were up to.

Saw the dropped note scam on tv, one of the three guys around the lady using the atm snatched her card, whilst she was distracted, swiped it through a portable reader before she retrieved note from ground and turned her attention back to atm ..... He even remained holding her card and merely asked if was hers !! Bold as brass !!!
The gang were being filmed by the law ... the lady could not believe what had happened .... They did not snatch her money, which left her non the wiser, that she had been the victem of scam !!

MasonA, Thanks for the info. I shall circulate it widely. I'd heard about this one but never knew what to look out for. Even being aware and extra cautious, I would probably have still been taken in. More worryingly, perhaps have.

Another thing to watch out for is when you use your card anywhere, it should not leave your sight. An x girlfiend of mine had her card details swiped in a petrol station in St. Albans. Just as she handed the card over to the cashier, an accomplice poked his head out of the door and said "phone call". The cashier then went into the back office still clutching the card. Upon his return appologised for the dealy and dealt with the transaction as normal.

It wasn't untill the police caught the gang and told her where they had been opperating that she remembered the incident. She never got any of her money back though.

One of my collegues got caught out by the "night safe out of order" scam. Going to deposit a large sum in the night safe at his bank, found a notice on it reading "night safe out of order, please use letter box". The thieves then simply fished it out before the bank opened. This gang was later caught but and my collegue didn't get any of his money back either.

I do think it is encouraging to see that society is evolving a more intelligent, nicer, politer criminal though. Let’s hope that this sort of ingenuity is replacing the violent criminal who bursts into the bank with a sawn-off shotgun; very frightening I would think.
Where can you buy that sort of kit?

Just adds to the repetoire ... Replaces nothing ... Spawns even more sobs !!
