Why don't you use a selective lawn weedkiller, that kills broad-leaved weeds but not grass?
I just use whatever's at the DIY shed or garden centre.

The majority of plants are killed by frequent close mowing, because they can't live if you keep cutting their heads off, but lawn weeds have evolved to grow flat to the ground.
