I am about to build a single storey kitchen.
I wonder if solid 9inch celcon type blocks would be a good idea. the outside
is going to be rendered to match the existing. Do 9inch blocks have good
insulation qualities. Any info would be gratefully recieved.

From what you are propossing, I can only assume you havent applied for building Regs ?

NO a single skin 9" will not do UNLESS you propose to leave a 3" cavity, Insulate with at least 25mm of kingspan (or full cavity fill rockwool) and then build the inner skin with 4" blockwork.

You will then be left with one hell of a thick wall :-)

Have you applied for planning and building regs ?????

He could use 225mm celcon blocks and line the inside with 50mm celotex and plasterboard and it will be less thick than a traditional insulated cavity wall, and be just as good for insulation to current regs.

Or even with 100mm celcon solar or thermalite shield and 70mm celotex and plasterboard.

Hi Woody,

Yes he could BUT he states its a kitchen.

Would you fancy hanging cupboards to a drylined wall with kingspan or Celotex to screw into.

Celcon solar blocks would be far better than Thermolite as they are a denser block and will take a better load.

I would personally go for a cavity, especially seeing its a new build and he isn't trying to adapt a single skin wall..

Oilyboy,

Go for it mate. If thats the way you want to go then go for it. You would have to ensure you have a good means of preventing damp penetrating the blocks. And has woody stated earlier, ensure you have provisions to insulate to ensure you meet current regs. to be honest, I'm not sure if you would have to add additional insulation to a 9" solar block. But thinking logically, a solid wall would be one massive cold bridge with no air space to prohibit the transfer of cold to the inner face.

Why do you think double glazing is two pieces of glass with an air space and not one thick piece :? I do know that if you use 4" then you need at least 25mm of kingspan or simular Or a full cavity fill ( Rockwool or sim) I'm sure your BCO would advise you about this and i know for a fact he would probably strongly advise you to consider a cavity.

Personally, if it was me (and it was last year when i built my own extension) I would opt for a twin skin wall with at least a 3" cavity. For a small kitchen that you are proposing, it wouldn't cost that much extra to down rate to 4" blocks and do a twin skin.

But at the end of the day, Its your baby and your the one who knows how much you want to spend.

Good luck mate.
