Hi, we had our combi boiler moved approximately 1m away from where it previously was, into the new extension and when trying to start the boiler up, the engineer struggled to start it- instead, it just rumbled VERY loudly and he struggled with it for 2 days trying to get it to work.

After further checks, he's told us that the issue is due to low gas flow into the boiler, and that we need to fit 28mm thick copper piping from the mains gas inlet into the house to the boiler which could cost quite a bit.

A few months ago, we had the boiler replaced with a higher power model but the engineers didn't have to change the pipes and it worked perfectly fine, so would moving the boiler 1m further away from the gas supply really make the boiler not work and require new piping?

If it took him 2 days to work out that the gas pressure was low I think it might be wise to get another plumber involved. A gas pressure test should have been one of the basic checks during the recommissioning programme.

Any experienced engineer can just look at a gas supply pipe and know that its likely to be undersized.

There are actually two situations, slightly below spec which will still work but not meet the specification of a maximum of 1.0 mbar pressure loss.

Then there is a supply which is well below the spec and will cause problems with the boiler. This is usually where the pressure loss is over 5.0 mbar and this can cause problems with many models of boiler. This situation is often classified as At Risk or even Immediately Dangerous and should not be used.

You have not identified your boiler model.

Was the engineer Gas Safe registered?
