Boiler turned off - wiring?

Hi all,

About a month ago I had a new Glow worm 12Hx fitted. I have a fully pumped CH system with a roomstat, cylinderstat and three port valve.

The guy who fitted the boiler had removed a faceplate in the airing cupboard to do some wiring but he hadn't put the face plate back. Last week I pushed the mess of wires in and secured the faceplate. Since then (maybe coincidence) the boiler won't turn on - its dead

I have checked the wiring and there were a couple of loose terminal block connections so I remade them. Boiler still not working. The timer has power and appears to be working but I have no hot water\CH. I am using the electric immersion heater for hot water at the moment but would like to get the boiler running again :)

Can anyone suggest any ways forward or easy checks to do.

Many thanks.

You reall6y need to be competent with a multimeter and if not then please dont try to fix as you are working on 240V mains!

That said this boiler will require a permanent live to make it live and a switched live to make it come on when there is a call for heat.

Can you here the pump running or the 3 port valve moving if you turn power on/off. Are both your room stat and cylinder stat set to call for heat?

Permanent live would usually be a brown or red wire to boiler with the switched live as black or yellow. Try seeing if there is live from the 3 port valve orange wire.

Thanks for the reply sir.

I turn off the mains when messing with the wiring - not the most efficient way of working but safe. :)

There was a loose orange wire which I wired into the only spare terminal block connection. That didn't make it work - should I make sure that wire is wired into a live feed?

The 3 port valve is working but the pump doesn't appear to be running.

The orange wire would go to the boiler switched live as the signal to make it fire.

However, I really dont recommend fiddling with wiring is foy dont know what you are doing as you might blow it up! Let the installer do it properly for you!

Blow it up

I did get advice from a builder friend and he said if I got the wiring wrong I wouldn't break anything.

Think I may call the guy who fitted it back in.

Sounds to me as though you have wired the orange wire into the wrong terminal. if this was a spare block with no other wires to it then nothing will work!

The orange is usually the wire that supplys the switched live to the boiler and pump, so this I think is your problem. From afar I could not safely give an accurate description of how to connect it again properly. I don't even know how your sparky has wired it, he may not have done in a conventional industry standard way that us heating enginneers could follow without being there and tracing each connection.

I would suggest that you need to call him back or employ another tradesman locally.

Turn the power off to the boiler - does the timer still appear to have power?

If so then surely it's battery backed and therefore no indication that there is power to the boiler.

Even if you inadvertently caused some fault by pushing the wiring back in, such a fault shouldn't happen, so I would call the installer back to rectify it under the warranty that he must surely offer.

I would and make sure you have some hay for his horse and a peg for his ten gallon hat!!!!!!!!

Jaysus what kind of "competant" professional doesnt ensure that HIS wiring is left in a SAFE and sound condition

How he left it is outrageuous WFT would have happened if a dustbin lid had stuff his or her hand in it?????
