I've looked for some proper supports for our ageing bookcase, but can't find the right thing. The width of the track is around 6 or 7mm (my eyesight is shot).

At the moment, there are just steel pins in there and the shelves are collapsing.

Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

I have tried

without success.

Thank you for looking, but that's very similar to what I've got at the moment.

The track in the bookcase has holes in, but the wood behind doesn't, except where someone has butchered it to accept the wrong pegs, similar to the ones you picture.

The link in your OP isn't working for me.

I think it is a type of library strip, which has little shelf brackets that slot in and the weight of the shelf levers them tight. They are fitted the other way round, so there is a gap behind the hole for the tongue to hook into.

I found some listed as Bookcase Strips.

Yours seem to have round holes, I think they are usually square.

Thanks everyone.

Turning into a bigger job, as always!

But I'll look for some replacement strip and pegs.

Some possibilities:
- it's fitted the wrong way around, flipping it over would leave a gap for some potential fixing to sit in without making holes in the timber
- it's a completely different thing and someone has used it as a bookcase strip because it looks like a bookcase strip

The technical term for them is "Tonk strip" - can be easier to find the right item using the trade term. They normally require T-slots to be routed into the sides of the cabinet to install them. The OP's item, however, isn't one of them, I suspect it's been something which has been pressed into service. Tonk strips always have shelf brackets which have flat tabs to slot into the strips, as you show further down in your post.

There is a surface-mounted version of the library shelf strips as well which doesn't require grooves to b e routed, but to use those you need to rout or chisel two notches out of each end of the shelves to provide clearance for the strips. The brackets are also flat tabbed. Here in an example of this type:

Go to IronmongeryDirect and search for “Bookcase”; are any of those similar enough?
