when i boot it sets up ok desktop comes up for approx 10 secs
machine then reboots approx 4-5 times before it settles down

any ideas

Sasser virus had this effect, run a full virus scan with latest definitions.
Also, during any of the reboots did you get any messages related to lsass.exe?

Could possibly be a power supply problem. Does it occur more frequently when cold starting? Faulty hard disks also cause this to happen. Diagnostics can be found at the manufacturer sites.

update ran disk check
it trunicated ? approx 12 symantic files and seems to be ok now

In which case it might pay you to purchase a virus protection system and have it running permanently. Or you could go for a free version, such as AVG.

updaNO reception , we love them though .. te the ram ... get 2x 256 ram at your pc world it,online buying about £50 for double the RAM , at most £60 squid ,
if alone onsite here we can get you 4 X that to help you ....
