Botched Execution

Less good news for others is that they pronounced her brain dead the day before she woke up.

The court didn’t sentence her to be taken off life support, it sentenced her to a lethal injection using a specific drug. Unfortunately, it seems that drug was incompetently administered and possibly past its use by date.
Sick animals can be painlessly "put to sleep" with an injection, and when a patient is put out for an op he could easily be killed, again painlessly. The authorities must know this, so why is it not applied? My guess is it's because while execution isn't wanted to be too barbaric, it mustn't be completely trauma-free either, as where's the deterrent and retribution in that?

You don't know that.

IIRC, Cleopatra wanted to ensure herself a painless death so tested - among other things - a variety of snake venoms on people who had been condemned to death anyway.

Again IIRC, Egyptian cobra venom was likely selected, as it looked like the victim peacefully and quietly slipped away.

Again IIRC, researchers now believe that the death is far from pleasant: a terror-riddled suffocation while fully conscious but completely paralysed.

No you have to look at the age of those being executed, their history of drug abuse, long term incarceration making them rather unhealthy. In most cases they have been in prison for 30 years and are over 70. Then the slim chance of hope if they wriggle about as best they can to dislodge the needle and hope for a stay of execution in exchange for a blistered arm.
