Braking & total stopping distances.

Part of the driving game is to eliminate, as far as possible, surprises from one's own vehicle.

I've heard of Ford having a tinker with Maxaret in the late sixties. It was a Dunlop system. Dunlop also manufactured disc brakes when they were all new fangled.

a Maxaret (can't remember why though unless it was the name of the manufacturer of course).

5 | Why aren't car antilocks reducing crashes as expected?

No one knows for sure why their test performance has not translated into a significant reduction in real-world crashes. A possible reason is that the average motorist rarely experiences total loss of vehicle control, which antilocks are designed to prevent. There also is evidence that many car owners do not know how to use antilock brakes effectively. A 1994 Institute survey of drivers with antilock-equipped cars found that more than 50 percent in North Carolina and 40 percent in Wisconsin incorrectly thought they should pump the brakes.8 Another possibility is that some motorists may drive less cautiously because they believe antilocks allow them to brake better.

...Without ABS, the rider required numerous attempts to approach the maximum deceleration performance of the motorcycle.

With the use of ABS, however, the rider was able to quickly obtain consistent maximum deceleration results, whether the vehicle was
loaded or lightly loaded...

... the results of this testing make it clear that, of the motorcycles tested,
those equipped with the anti-lock braking system provide all riders with the advantage of a high level of braking performance at the time of need....

For me, that test series sums up the worth of ABS ...
