Britain will not seek to extend Brexit transition period, says minister

There is a big problem so all countries acting for themselves. You might call it political self interest :)

Its always good to remind ourselves of the benefit of the EU's collective buying power..

Im not sure how the story gives any indication of the EUs buying power.....anyway surely the EU doesnt buy stuff?

It seems rather to indicate the EU and its nation states are collaborating for the benefit of all 27.

France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands working together to find a vaccine for countries in Europe and beyond

The 4 countries want to involve the European Commission in negotiations and provide other EU member states with the opportunity to participate in initiatives resulting from the alliance. This will allow everyone in Europe – and especially those who are most vulnerable – to benefit from a vaccine. The alliance is also working to make a portion of vaccines available to low-income countries, including in Africa.

EU urges joint efforts by bloc's states to buy Covid-19 vaccines
Kyriakides said the two initiatives had the same goal, adding: “Both tracks should converge for the benefits of all 27. This is about working together and not in competition.”

we left the EU on 31st January.2020
We did, in terms of jargon only. We actually stop paying them, stop adhering to their rules and lose the benefits of membership at the end of this year.

I think everyone will be relieved when it's all done and dusted. I just hope we have a hard nosed set of negotiators ready for the slog.(y)

You might wish to tell the BBC..They think we left the EU on 31st January.2020
thats funny -I ordered some stuff from Logitech in the EU last week -no customs clearance needed, its almost like being in the single market.

Actually the customs union has been extended 6 months into next year - after a fashion. It's called a light touch, as businesses wants certainty. LOL They still wont know what they will have to do so agony prolonged even further.

They wont call it an extension of the customs union but .......................

To extend a customs union would require the agreement of the UK and the EU.

The EU has not agreed. It considers the integrity of the Single Market to be essential. This has been known for more than the four years of Brexit, though Brexers still deny it.

They wont call it an extension of the customs union but .......................
no the UK is going to allow imports without proper checks and duty wont have to be paid for 6 months, basically because the UK isnt ready

"the EU would not see the UK's move as a "concession but rather a pragmatic move by a country that's not ready to implement full checks by then".

'take control of our borders'.......irony eh

howeer the EU is taking back control:

'the EU said it would implement full checks on UK exports at the start of 2021.' -they want to protect their single market, which is what remainers have been saying for years.

Has anybody seen government job adverts yet, for scores of thousands of additional customs officers and border police?

The 6 months extension was put down to cv19 and announced in one of the daily briefs without any details other than to ensure continued supplies. BBC announced it briefly, no details and C4 mentioned the 6 months.

C4 reappeared on the daily brief for a day then absent again after the late lockdown report. Don't suppose the 6 months will do them much good. Some Tory MP's hate them but having watched their news for years they don't care who is in power. On Brexit my general impression is that they may have been for out.
