Hi guys, I've got a broken wire to a push button of a doorbell.

How can I test what wire is broken. I have only around 2cm's of wire that I cut back :(

Should I just cut back and see if I loose the break?

Many thanks, Devs.

If you know the wire is broken, what is the point of testing? Either the break is in the short bit of slack you have to play with, or it is not, and if it is then cutting it back will fix the problem, and if it is not it won't, and the test will not have helped.

Do you mean that the bell has stopped working and you don't know if it is because the cable is broken?

Do you have a multimeter?

Fair comment mate, I'm just finishing off my house and had some stone fitted around the entrance way. The bell was working and sat ready for cutting back and securing. I foolishly striped the small wire back with my teeth and must have broken one of them. I've now cut back but its still not working. :(

Shame as I didn't want to use a wireless bell here.

Thanks anyhow.

Odd to have broken a conductor that far back by using an inappropriate tool right at one end.

Yeah hay-ho mate, its a goner. I'll stick a wireless on it, just a shame as a bit of effort and expense went into the setup.

Thanks for the help. ;)

Why not disconnect the wire in question at the other end, GENTLY strip back just enough wires at the push end, and do a simple continuity test?

Just to prove if that wire is ok or not.

If you touch the two ends together at one end of the length of wire; at the other end do a simple continuity test with a test meter.

Can you use a test meter?

On the continuity setting, the tester should beep when the test leads touch, so by doing this on your bell wire you can give it a test for sure.

Haha thanks for all the help guys. Unfortunately it's too late now the wires lost in the wall. Wireless ordered.

Cheers, Devs.
