BS1361 Fuse

Just purchased a 'British' made 9.5Kw shower. The instructions say it should be protected by a 45A BS1361 fuse.
This seems a bit of a retrograde step after having my electrics upgraded to a split load consumer unit?
Any comments please?

I would take it as the instructions were written by a non-technical person and that by 'fuse' they mean protective device which will include MCBs.
That being the case you need to select a cable suitable for this and provide 30mA RCD protection. The work is also notifiable, which will usually mean leaving it to a registered competant electrician.

The installation instructions are professionally written, even if we question their correctness.

There is a table for the different power rating showers and the suggested protective device to adopt. The interesting cut off point is 8.6Kw. eg.

For units up to 8.5Kw it suggests various MCB's, as example below.

for 7.8 to 8.5 Kw it lists a 40A type B MCB
then for 8.7 to 9.5Kw it lists 45A BS 1361 fuse (protective device)

Yes this work will be for a qualified electrician, but a) I am interested and b) I like to be fully informed so I know exactly what's taking place and what I'm paying for.

FYI, I have just been to a place where a galaxy 1000 was fitted by the builder. Its an 8,5KW. First thing was it had not been put on the RCD side of the board, when i on behalf of the owner questioned this with the builder he claims no mention was made of an RCD. Second thing, to turn the shower off you had to turn the dial through to the very hottest point before it went off. So you get scalded turning it off and then if you happen to jump in the shower just after someone has turned it of you get a blast of boiling water. Spoke to the manufactur and they admitted this was wrong and thought the valve must have been put on in reverse!!

I raise both these popints purely as a heads up to the quality issues that may be found with this make of shower

No there is no mention of RCD protection for any of their units.

Thanks for your valued input STI, I think a call to the manufacturer is next. And I thought we couldn't go wrong with a British made unit ?
