BT and fiber

So it joined all the AAs and AAAs.
And no doubt joined NiCds, LAs, NiMHs....

The fact that at a dump/recycling centre/civic amenity site/tip you lob all the batteries in together doesn't mean that a supermarket has to be happy with you depositing an old car battery next to their bin.

My point is that “domestic “ might mean slightly different things to different people that’s all. Sometimes dictionaries have questionable meanings “Electricution” is a simple example as opposed to electric shock, Electrical - Execution , you have to be dead by definition to qualify. Yet I have seen otherwise!

I was quite shocked to see dictionaries now giving both meanings.

Indeed it might, to people who will not accept what dictionaries say, either because they cannot bring themselves to admit they've been wrong, or refuse to face the fact that somebody else who was wrong gave them a false definition.

Is that an ideal way to treat a battery? Lithium and lead acid alike?
The batteries used (or at last they were in my day) are 100AH 6volt batteries in stacks of 8 designed to be kept in a 'float' charge state. Depending the load imposed on the power rack there could be 1, 2 or 3 stacks in a power rack. Such batteries were originally designed for Alarm systems.
Design capacity was to have 2 hours running on battery. (I know, though 'cycling' the power rack that the batteries would keep the kit 'alive' for longer - nearly 4 hours!)

Or in many cases not being aware of the change of a words meaning in dictionaries.

Absolutely, In my day it was massive open topped flooded lead acid 5000Ah cells.

However the batteries were not specifically developed for a particular vocation, just as a replacement for earlier formats.

These are all definitions from current dictionaries:

Are you saying that they are all (relatively) recent, and that before then the definition of "domestic" was before then such that

.. a car battery ... if you have a garage within or attached to (so still within) your home then it can be classed as domestic.

would have been correct? i.e. a car battery was not a "domestic" one unless it was in an attached garage?

The definition of domestic wasn't something I had disputed and please don't bother trying to continue the discussion with me.

However as you are continuing in your regular crusade mode; I you contact the government to inform them they don't know what they are talking about as they are using the term without the dictionary definitions.

I never suggested that you were disputing it, but after this:

My point is that “domestic “ might mean slightly different things to different people that’s all.

When you responded:

It seemed reasonable to ask you if there had been a change of the meaning of the word "domestic" in dictionaries, that's all.

Are they?

Where?

Well dictionaries do sometimes change by adding new words , English is a living language after all, so maybe there can be a slight change in meanings too sometimes? And not all dictionaries are always in total agreement, there’s more than one and they are all compiled by people, therefore we have more than one source to refer to anyway. For an everyday normal usage we each might mean slightly different things. A technical meaning as used by a trade or professional might have a slightly different meaning from the everyday term and a legal usage one might be slightly different again. No wonder we might not always totally agree about a word or phrase. It would be startling if we all always did.

What about twins - that film with Arny and Danny , not many would think of them as twins, in fact my Mum commented about some twins she knew were not “true twins” I looked up the term and found that in medical circles there were about 7 or 8 or something classes of twins and one group was loosely known as true twins but some folk had mistakenly assumed the other groups were not “ truly twins” which apparently they are all twins in reality but just different types by grouping, someone with a decent medical background could explain this far better than I have just done ( and more accurately too!)

I still use dial up as i love the sound of the router!
