What's the best material for use building in around back boilers? Vermiculite is suitable isn't it? I'll need to brick up a bit as well. Is there anything wrong with ordinary brick and mortar butting up against the side of the boiler?

It's a wrap around back boiler for buring wood and coal in an open fronted fire. In order to get at the pipes assuming it was backed up with on the back and sides with vermiculite the only way would be break the vermiculite away.
Correct me if I'm wrong but if there was a problem with the back boiler or the joints then the fireplace and surround would have to be taken out anyhow in order to get at the pipes at the side of the boiler from the front as they won't be accessible from the side?

You are talking about an old solid fuel back boiler with a damper in the chimney, I wasn`t sure. Now I am. I don`t know what vermiculite is to be honest, I normally use Thermalite blocks for any building work that I do in regards to altering chimney breasts/builders openings. I`m still not sure what you are doing though

vermiculite looks like cork granuals i belive it's a form of mica we always packed the solid fuel b/b's with them

Thanks for your replay Ken. I was going to pack the back and sides of the back boiler with vermiculite and brick up the gap to the vermiculite with old brick and cement and maybe a bit of bonding. Does that sound right?

Cladding was top of my list for the builders merchant tomorrow as I know the havoc it can play with copper piping as you say.
