building next to party wall

Hi I want to build a lean to roof at the side of my house, I have about 3m between my house and the party wall between me and my neighbour.

I don't know who owns the wall, but generally is there a rule about keeping a set distance away from the neighbour, i.e. does it have to be at least a metre away or anything?

This lean to isn't going to be anything special, just a wooden frame with some corrugated pvc sheeting on top.

If you have a detatched house there is no party wall.

Dont go attaching anything to the wall without their permision unless you can prove the wall is a party wall and sitting astride the boundry.
