soldering iron is fine for pine but avoid resin pockets as it will spit at you 
it definatly wont catch fire unless its a very large industrial size an you leave it in contact for ages [several mins]
you can actualy age wood nicely with a blow lamp[naked flame]just keep it moving to stop the heat building up
