Buy your way out of Jail

Paying blood money would work in most countries, but would disproportionately benefit the wealthy. Or we could adopt the the Americun practice of politically motivated prosecutions

£140K for a drug mule is better than the tax payer paying £45k per year to lock her up.

I'm only talking about foreign criminals here. I.e. people who are going to be deported and prevented from coming back.

Why? Money talks, I suspect there are plenty of Brits would take the money.

I see a difference between a criminal that can buy their way out of jail and return to freedom in the UK and one who will never be allowed here again.

If the person is going to serve their sentence and then be deported, why not given them a way to shorten it and reduce our costs. Its not like we have a goal to rehabilitate them back in to society.

Doesn't that already happen in Britain.
Judges sometimes order criminals to hand over their hidden assets or face more jail time.

proceeds of crime isn't quite the same thing.

In this case we have a person who acted as a drug mule, may or may not have made some money doing so, got caught and had to pay 140k or get a long sentence. Her family raised the money.

I highly doubt she made £140k running drugs or bought off-shore hidden assets with her "profits".

Many people have dual nationality, do we take them back after they have bought release for their foreign crimes, or kick them out for crimes committed here?
