I need to run some SWA to my detached garage then into a small cu for lights and sockets.

Does the cable need to be under ground, or can it be overhead?

The distance from house to garage is about 2m.

either, but you really wouldnt put swa overhead.

4.0mm² split con attached to a catenary wire would be better if you are going overhead.
