Putting a 230 volt product on a 12 volt supply unlikely to cause a problem, but a 12 volt item on a 230 volt supply it is.
That's obviously true, but my concern is much more about people 'fiddling about inside' (or, worse, giving it to their children to 'play with') something labelled 'low voltage' - since, as I'm sure you would quickly discover if you questioned some members of the general public, it is very widely believed/assumed that 'low voltage' does not present any significant risk to limb, let alone life.
I suppose it was inevitable that someone would find "an exception which proves the rule". However, that doesn't make me any less concerned about it.
