College said not to bother with anything less than a avo megger, but have not got that sort of dosh at the present time ( I know that I will have to get decent equipment eventually)
Have to go out all morning, but will check in later to see if any of you can be of help....

Take a look at this: http://www.beha.com/files_d/sets/1333.pdf

Looks ideal for a household starter set - multimeter, voltage indicator and dedicated continuity tester, all in a handy case. 104 Euros.

Couldn't find details of the set in English, but all 3 individual instruments are listed.

Or as just-thinking said, start looking at eBay - presumably you have facilities at college that you could use to check the accuracy of anything you buy?

Thank you, you two, took me longer to get back than I thought. I will look at the info you have both given,
Wonders what does 102 euros work out (to??? )

buy a meter, its only a safety issue..but its your safety.
-----sorry somber reply-----
i am a gas service engineer,i dont do any additional wiring, but i need to work to part p,course cost me £900.00 plus vat.
meter cost £499.00 including a break out box so easy to test for the BIG R.Ss.
i have worked in the gas industry for 20 years and i now need to issue an electric minor works certificate even if i replace a same for same part.which includes a fuse.
i need to comply with corgi,so my charges will need to increase.
i live in amsterdam and travel back to uk for 4 full days of wok in london.yes its a tax thing.but i am a cockney and love london.
there is no cheap meters in euro land, even my well trusted alphatek is made in euro land.

keep safe.

Dear moderator....Accept my profuse apologies, I will not err in this fashion again

Just thinking...thank you for advice, I have only completed the first half term at college and know that I will need decent equipment, but at the mo I can practise on my house ( the house that Jack renovated??), and I just want to make sure that I am not making really stupid mistakes ie Polarity, CPC and insulation nicks

Thanks

sorry saw your reply late.
you really need a meter which will FULLY check your wiwring, inluding polarity.Zs,insulation and rcd cut off current and times.

meter shown works well if you want to prod live circuits, umm bad idea.

take care.please.

That's not the job of a multimeter...

the item is an insulation resistance tester made by "megger" very nice buit not really what you want, may i suggest if its just for testing this and that in the house, you go to maplins, they have loads of dmm's and there is even one for less than £5
