Can dimmer switches work 2 way and if so, if one's down and one's up how does that work!?

unfortunately you can only have one dimmer switch on 2 way lighting under normal wiring circumstances.

So called 2-way dimmer switches are designed to work with a normal two-way switch so either end can switch the light on or off but only one end can control the brigtness.

If you want dimming from two locations you need to look into electronic master-slave dimmers..

Thanks guys, thought it was something like that.

If I want one floor dimmable and one floor not, is there a 2 gang switch which has one switch as normal on off and one as a dimmer knob?

Dimmers should not be fitted on stairs, as poorly illuminated stairs will inevitably result in someone falling down them and being seriously injured or worse.
