Hi All,

I'd like to install a new plug socket in the main bedroom, no far from a fairly conveniently placed junction box.

I've taken a picture of the box opened up, with the wires for the new socket shown in the top-right.

Can anyone check the below ant tell me how I might need to link up the wires for this?

Would the below be correct?:

Thanks in advance!

That looks like a lighting junction box so unfortunately you can't.

Ok thanks for that! My knowledge is obviously slim and theres no way I'd attempt to connect anything up without getting opinions/information.

I was hoping to get away with having to pay a sparky to come all the way out just to add a single plug socket.

Actually adding socket etc and even getting it to work is quite simple.

Doing it correctly and safely is something entirely different though.

I am capable of building a hot air balloon & even getting it to fly.
Any person trying to fly in it though would be crazy (if they survived!)

you should probably get an electrician to check the existing wiring anyway.

As whoever did it missed out the green/yellow sleeving on the earths, who knows what other little nastinesses they've left lurking in the installation.

It is not even that simple as you have to know if the socket is on a spur or not. If it is already on a spur you cannot add to it.

Something about that junction box doesn't look right...

You need to trace the wires to find out were they go/to.

The red core of the cable entering at 7 o'clock is not connected to anything, neither is the yellow of the cable at 4 o'clock.

Am I correct in assuming that if the remaining cores (black & unsleeved CPC) are functioning, that they could be line, switched line or neutral?

That box does seem odd, I wouldn't assume anything. My best guess would be the cable at 10 o'clock goes to a 2 gang switch. The other 2 cables go to pendants/roses. The cable at 4 o'clock is the permanent live to the switch and a switched live back from the first gang of the switch, and the cable at 7 o'clock is the second gang switch live. No neutrals in there.
Or maybe not :?

it might have once been that the twin+E was the cable to a switch and then it was converted to two way switching. And then modified / bodged again

Red and blue could be strappers on the two way switching circuit (L1 and L2) with the yellows going to the commons. Then one of the yellows would have been connected to the red ( of the twin+E ) as live and the other to the black as switched live, The twin and earth then going to the ceiling rose,

It rather looks like the 10'oclock to 4 o'clock is one cable which has had the outer removed. The likely reason would be to provide a neutral for something on the end of the 7 o'clock cable (probably a light fitting). You need to find it anyway to be sure..and please sleeve those bare copper pieces before theydecend into the live recesses.
