Can I straight swap 45A for 32A in consumer unit?

6mm² T & E cable should suffice for the connection between outlet and cooker. There's nothing wrong with using 10mm² but it might be a pig to terminate.

Either way, make sure the terminals are nice and tight.

There's no need to upgrade to RCD protection if you're just connecting a new cooker and not modifing the circuit, desireable though it may be.

As a clue to determining your cooker circuit cable size, have a look at the CPC (earth) conductor: 6mm² cable usually has a single CPC, and 10mm² is stranded.

I knew there was some difference above 32A - OSG "3.5.2 Disconnection times - TN circuits
A disconnection time of not more than 0.4 s is required for final circuits with a rating (ln) not exceeding 32 A. A disconnection time of not more than 5 s is required for final circuits exceeding 32 A, ..."

They are all 30 mA.

If the cooker circuit shares an RCD with smaller circuits it should be OK.

You can normally acheive a 0.4 second disconnection without the use of an RCD.

Are you thinking of 411.3.3?

Thanks you guys... After MUCH delibertaing, I got a friend in to connect the cooker.

I told him my worries about the size of fuse/cable etc and he said new builds now have 40A standard and that my 45A would be OK.

THANKS again all

^^ Sounds like he knows exactly what he's talking about
