Long story short moved into this house in Feb. Thermostat never worked, previous owner just managed heat by switching on and off at programmer.

Purchased a new thermostat (same model) and the wiring is totally different. There should be neutral, live and call for heat, but I think call for heat and live are both going to live?

Is this to loop the fault out so that it will always call for heat?

Not sure what the different colour sleeves are about either? Which one is call for heat?

Any help hugely appreciated - http://imgur.com/AupDDGi

Blue will be Neutral, almost certainly the Red will be permanent Live and the Yellow will be call for heat.
With the Yellow connected to Live there would be a permanent call for heat.
In this case the Yellow should be connected to terminal 3.

If you need more help, just post details of the new thermostat.

Thanks, Jack appreciate your reply.

Any idea what the off-colour sleeves are there to do?

Cheers

TBH I'm not sure why there's a black one on the Neutral, but it's common to have a red sleeve on wires which can be Live when it isn't obvious from their colour.
