Can we use an in wall extractor instead of an over hob extractor hood?

Hi

We are putting a kitchen in a new extension. We don’t want a typical hob extractor over the hob. Can we use a fan extractor in a wall, like you get in bathrooms, that vents to the outside and still comply with ventilation building regs?

If so can the fan be located in any external wall in the kitchen or does it still have to be over the hob?

I did exactly this in a kitchen extension, BC were fine with it. We never used the fan mind, as it was across on the opposite wall of the extension, what would be the point?

The requirement is for a fan, not where it goes. However if the fan is not a hood over the hob it will need higher performance - 60 l/s instead of 30 l/s for a hood.

An advantage of a hood is that you won't end up will steam on the ceiling (which will leave stains).

We recently had new kitchen fitted. The new hood is pants. We have brown stains on the ceiling that never previously occurred with the old hood. A fan only option (for us) would be even worse.

downdraught suckers are not much good, and are noisy.

a hood will catch fumes and steam that drift up from the cooking

preferably it will be larger than the cooking surface to catch sideways drift

your view will not be obstructed if you have the sense to put the hood at a height where you cannot bang it with your face while stirring your porage.

or a bridging unit that conceals a canopy extractor inside a matching cabinet

Great as long as it's on an outside wall as opposed to the shiny and new one shown in the brochure. Charcoal filtered extractors, whether they are mounted above or on the hob, will not satisfy reg's.
