A very ordinary picture, but an incredible story behind it...

Me: Why is the socket hanging off the wall?

Customer: Because I wanted to dissuade my 4 yo daughter from using it.

Was there some subsequent dialogue? If the customer really had no insight into the craziness/seriousness of the situation, one might well feel duty-bound to 'set some wheels in motion'.

Kind Regards, John.

The subsequent dialogue was:

Me: that's incredibly dangerous. If anyone had touched inside the socket they could have died.

Customer: Shrugs....

Hmmm - I was rather afraid you were going to say something like that. It is, of course, very tempting to 'not get involved', but I suppose if one saw the same parent dangling his 4 y-o daughter out of an upstairs window by her ankles, or getting her to hold a target whilst for target practice with an air rifle, one would then feel pretty inclined (or obliged) to involve some authorities.

Kind Regards, John.

Would I take it to the authorities ?

It might have been that the owner was just too ignorant to realise the danger he had created. But the shrug would indicate a total lack of concern for the child's welfare.

It would depend on how the rest of the house looked and whether the loose socket was only one of several hazards both electrical and non electrical. If it was one of several hazards then I would consider the child may be at risk and act on it.

I would mention it informally to a friend of mine who although retired still has contacts in child protection services and could get things moving to appraise the family's state of mind about the child.

I agree totally, and think I would do the same. In my case I have the advantage of a family member to whom I could 'mention it informally' in order to get some investigative/assessment wheels in motion.

What did you do with the socket? I would have refitted it and told her to go to Boots and look in the child safety section.

Did you refit it? Def worth an enquiry to the authorities I'd have thought.
