Can you join a telephone cable to extend it?

The BT master is around 15m from my new texecom veritas box. i have 2 rolls of 10m cable. i need to install a 2nd bt socket next to the texecom to connect to the comms2400 unit (do i? or does the cable go straight into the box??)

can i join two lengths of bt phone cable together and if so how, i want it to be a good connection as if its broken i dare say the alarm will start going off etc.


Or... i have a a box of cat5E cable - shall i just use that instead?

Cat5 will be fine, and would be preferable to avoid the joint.
