Can you make your own roof slate hooks ?

I know they are about 50p each , however has anyone tried to make their own roof repair hooks ? , surely you are just being a piece of metal and sharpening one end to a point , as long as the length is correct I'm sure it's possible , has anyone had any experience this , also I've been informed that these alone are not sufficient and the tile needs to have a dab of roof sealant on the top of the tile , from experience, is this necessary?

Lead srips were always used in the past. You need something that won't corrode, Stainless perhaps

you don't use sealant when using slate hooks .

I once made a tile hanging 'bracket hook' out of a SS housing tie. The tiles are still there.

My whole roof is pegged, minimal (copper) nails. There is not a jot of roof sealant anywhere to be found. I went for lead which was more expensive, but a joy to watch and gorgeous in situ.

I would imagine that forming the exact loops is appropriate stainless steel rod would be very difficult - how many do you need?

Ive ended up buying some , they were £10 for 10 , I only need about 5 ,to be honest they are approx the same thickness as wire coat hangers , I'm sure If anyone could be bothered and only needed a couple you could fashion them out of that , thanks for the advice , be careful of those roofs , we don't want another Rod Hull scenario
