Can You Use 'Just For Copper' Adhesive On Gas Pipes?

My local has had a lot of work done replacing gas pipes from the meter to other areas/appliances. The main 28mm pipe from meter is visible in corner of bar area from floor up to the ceiling. It is standard copper tube and end feed fittings. I notice they haven't been soldered, and there is a dark substance where you would expect to see the usual solder 'ring of confidence' where the pipe enters the fittings.

What is this likely to be? Just For Copper adhesive? Wasn't aware you could use it on gas if it is.

Probably just oxidised flux...laco seems to leave a residue. Have a look at other joints to confirm solder.

Edit: meaning you were paying far too much attention to your surroundings instead of engaging in barstool conversation :)

A big NO but you never know, it is approved for water and they claim it been tested at above 500 psi, or the installer had one too many, fluxed it and forgot to solder it :)

It might be rated for 500psi water it that has nothing to do with the permeability of gas, nor the melting point of the substance.

It is just an anaerobic sealant. And easily disassembled with gentle heat.

It was either examine the plumbing fittings or make the usual pub talk about sex, politics and religion.

Plus the fact I'm 'Billy No Mates'. ;) ;)
 
Thanks for all your replies. I only had a quick look at the fittings and pipe. I did rub the dark substance with my finger and it didn't rub off to expose any solder. The big thing is I couldn't see any heat marks or blueing you get when apply heat to copper, and there were no blobs or runs where the solder would have been was fed in. I could be wrong. Will try to get a photo without looking like an anorak.

Nice job. Looks like you had the Brasso out. :)

Will have to get a pic of the install. I could be wrong (couple of pints of Stowford won't have helped), but I've never seen end feed with a dark ring where you would normally see a silver coloured ring of solder.
