wonder if the crooks will cash in with false hallmarking?

After I saw one of the "cha-ching for ya bling" type adverts I went to a website out of curiosity and on the very front page was a load of stuff about how they "use the latest methods to ensure it's real gold, so don't try and send us your gold-plate or discount-shop-bling you chav, or we'll report you for fraud!!!". It wasn't phrased QUITE like that, but you get the picture.

One of the areas they make their money is gems. If you send in a gold ring with a few diamonds, they only pay you for the gold, but they keep the diamonds too.

As my entire gold stash amounts to one pair of cufflinks and a less-than-weighty ring, I can't imagine they'd cover the cost of the postage if I tried it!
