I have a 1" cast iron water pipe supplying an old high level cistern. I want to chop it off low down and couple it to 15mm copper pipe to supply a new modern toilet. I know "cast" is joined with threaded fittings, so would it be possible to join like this? :/

thanks in advance

If it`s 1 inch OD. it`ll be 3/4 galvanised iron ( not cast  ) so you`ll need a 3/4 adapter , as Buck said

Does that mean I can cut the steel or do I have to join in at nearest threaded steel joint available that will undo?

As the replies state, nearest threaded joint. If you cut the steel, you won't be able to join it to the copper.

No it won't.

3/4 Galv is internally 3/4 with an outside dia of 1.05 inch.

22mm compression fits 22mm copper which is measured od.
